WebMicrocytic hypochromic anemia is characterized by decreased hemoglobin, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and normal to increased RDW. RBC count is normal to increased depending upon the cause of anemia. The peripheral blood smear shows red cells which are smaller in size (microcytes) containing less hemoglobin (hypochromic).
