WebContrary to popular opinion, laws are based on morality. Not the other way around. “It’s bad because it’s illegal” is a circular argument and begs the question “why is it illegal?” As a young person you may accept that laws are written for many reasons, and that someone must have made each law for some reason. WebI’ve actually put some thought into this question before, and I can’t name any law or legal doctrine not based on some form of morality or ethics. We have a law against murder, and we can argue whether the purpose of that is moral/religious, or ethical (particulatly Hobbesian or utilitarian), but that still requires some form of basic ethical belief.
